Lazy summer lunches, cosy Autumn nightcaps, getting the gang round for the first BBQ of the season, or making the most of the last rays with an alfresco family dinner.
There's something magical about outdoor cooking and dining and more and more of us are investing in our outside spaces. We've seen a definite increase post Covid in clients looking for bespoke outdoor kitchens and we love helping them to create something truly unique.
Considering an outdoor kitchen? Here are our top 5 tips:
Location, location, location.
Not as exciting as a wood-fired pizza oven but probably the most important investment you'll make is taking the time to plan your space properly.
Think about exposure to the elements, where the sun will hit at different times, how close you are to neighbours, and the distance between food prep and eating areas. If you have a large space think about zoning areas for cooking, eating… and relaxing.
Storage is king
Storage is key in any kitchen but it's even more important outdoors. You want to be able to access utensils and equipment easily... and pack them away safely too.
Thoughtful configuration of shelves, drawers, racks and cabinetry will make your kitchen look slick – and your cheffing too.
Invest in your prep spaces
Whether you're rustling up a mid-week family dinner or entertaining a crowd, you'll need a good flat surface where you can chop, slice, and dice like a pro.
An outdoor worktop needs to be durable, heat-resistant and weatherproof. Porcelain is a great choice as it ticks all these boxes and looks great too. If you're looking for additional work surface, consider adding a porcelain worktop to a side table or mobile cart.
Everything – and the kitchen sink?
An outdoor kitchen can be as simple as well-designed units and a BBQ, or everything and the kitchen sink. Traditional appliances and an outdoor sink can be useful, but you'll need to consider if plumbing and electrics can be installed. An alternative is to install a sink on the exterior wall of your house close to an existing tap.
Budget
When you factor in things like BBQ's, smokers, pizza ovens and firepits, seating, and lighting, the costs can quickly mount. Try to think practically about what you'll really be using the space for and how you want to live your outside life. Get a clear wish list and work out costs before you press 'buy' on that Big Green Egg...
